• When planting new gardens or filling in gaps it’s a good idea to place the plants on top of the ground first. You can then see whether it suits the area and surrounding plants. This saves a lot of extra work if you decide to change your mind after planting!

• Check the labels for plant size and dimensions, making sure you have chosen a suitable position.

• Visualise the fully grown size, ensuring it will not obstruct other plants or provide too much shade, thus restricting growth.

Next:

• Dig a hole twice the width of the plant and slightly deeper than the length of the pot.

• Turn the plant upside down and gently tap out of the pot, placing in the centre of the hole.

• Firm in with a good mix of compost such as Tui’s Organic Compost or Tui Garden Galore Sheep pallets. Alternatively, you may backfill with soil.

• Water well, using between 1-3 litres of water (up to half a bucket). This is very important as it ensures good root development and will help it to establish quickly.
