SOPHORA MICROPHYLLA 'KOWHAI' - PLANT OF THE MONTH JUNE 2009 THE PRESS
Commonly found throughout most of New Zealand, the Kowhai tree with its masses of vibrant yellow flowers is truly a New Zealand icon. What you may not be aware of are its notable medicinal properties. Steeped in history, this tree is a medicinal marvel, treating in the past a number of ailments from cuts and bruises to gastrointestinal, respiratory and musculoskeletal complaints. But be warned, do not try this at home; this beauty is renowned for its toxic alkaloids.
Of the three species of New Zealand Kowhai available, Sophora microphylla (known as the South Island Kowhai) is a smaller tree, with spreading branches more inclined to droop. Widespread in New Zealand, the Chathams and Chile, Kowhai (which means yellow in Maori) graces us with the most spectacular display of colour in the spring when its abundance of yellow flowers burst on to the scene, attracting our wealth of nectar-feeding birds to its blooms. From tui and bellbirds to native wood pigeons, the Kowhai tree will truly entertain you with its feeding guests.
Commonly found in parks, forests, river banks and coastal areas, Kowhai's adaptable nature will find itself just as at home in your garden. Just driving around Christchurch will prove to you the popularity of this tree. Hardy by nature and a tolerant constitution, the Kowhai is a popular choice for the modern structured garden.
Press Gardening in association with Gardening Solutionz has five Kowhai plants to give away. To enter the draw, write your name and address on the back of an envelope and send it to Kowhai Giveaway, Press Gardening, PO Box 1005, Christchurch 8140 to reach The Press no later than noon Wednesday 10th June 2009.
